Dental chews as their name suggests are specifically designed to help promote dental hygiene for your dog. The materials they are made of and the chewing they stimulate are designed to help clean your dogs teeth and keep his gums healthy, by removing the tartar that can accumulate on a dog's teeth. If your dog is a chewer anyway, it makes sense to offer him a chew that can help with this problem. Plaque and tartar build up can lead to bad breath problems also - the last thing you need is a dog with bad breath! You can even clean your dogs teeth with special toothpaste and a vet can of course scale them (as a dentist would yours), but this is usually quite an expensive procedure done under general anaesthetic. Much better to give him something to chew that can help alieviate the problem or stop it becoming a problem in the first place.
