If, like our Labrador / German Sheppard cross George, your dog can get through a fair number of chews in a week, you may find that it becomes quite an expensive habit (though less expensive than if the target of the chewing is your shoes or furniture!). We've searched before to try and find the best price we can for his favourite pressed rawhide chews, and find some local pet shops or even garden centres can give reasonable prices - but still not great. Which is why I have been looking to find somewhere to buy dog chews in bulk. Even buying his favourite 10" rawhide cigars(!) in packs of 5 from our local big pet store - they were 79p each. However, I have found somewhere at last that I can wholeheartedly recommend. I'd never thought of eBay as being a good source of dog chews - which was silly as I am a habitual eBay buyer. I found one or two possibilities, tried one that would sell me 75 of the 10" rawhide chews (which is bulk enough for me) with free delivery, with each chew being 33p each - which is much more like what I was hoping for! The eBay store in question is Maltbys Stores Of Hull (established in 1904 apparently) - and they were very good. Free delivery within 48 hours (though mine were with me in 24 - ordered Sunday, arrived Tuesday) and George loves them - but not as much as I like the price! Rawhide dog chews are the classic dog chew that everyone thinks of when thinking of a treat for their dog. Ideal for keeping your dog occupied, they come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, from knotted bone shapes, strips, shoes, balls and even as compressed (or pressed) rawhide chews.

Rawhide chews as their name suggests are made from natural rawhide - animal skin, usually cow hide but some times a mixture of cow and pig skin is used. The hide is tanned and dried before being formed into the final shape you see - frequently a rawhide bone shape. Pressed (compressed) rawhide dog chews are made of many layers and bits of rawhide pressed together in a gelatin base, frequently compressed rawhide is available in the form of a rawhide bone.

Whilst rawhide dog chews are fun for you dog to chew - and most dogs just love chewing them - there are some important safety issues to be borne in mind when giving your dog rawhide dog chews. Rawhide expands when it is wet, which means that large pieces torn off and swallowed could expand in your dogs stomach, causing discomfort or in rare circumstances intestinal blockage. The rawhide strips available often also have sharp edges which can cut a dogs mouth. A small dog could potentially choke on a large piece of rawhide. This all probably sounds a bit alarming - but observe a few simple rules and many hours of chewing pleasure await your dog:

Always supervise your dog when it is chewing a rawhide dog chew
Remove any large pieces of flat chew that the dog has pulled off
Choose an appropriate type of chew for your dog, depending on its size - what you don't want is something it could be tempted to swallow whole. For example, I'd avoid rawhide shoes for bigger dogs.
The best sort of chew to choose are the ones based on compressed rawhide - e.g. a compressed rawhide dog bone. These are less likely to break off in the bigger chunks that could cause problems. They are also harder and last longer!

If the above worries you too much, then consider one of the modern alternatives such as a Nylabone or a Kong dog toy. Having said that, I've been a dog owner all my life and have never had any problems with rawhide dog chews - and my two dogs love them!

Dental chews as their name suggests are specifically designed to help promote dental hygiene for your dog. The materials they are made of and the chewing they stimulate are designed to help clean your dogs teeth and keep his gums healthy, by removing the tartar that can accumulate on a dog's teeth. If your dog is a chewer anyway, it makes sense to offer him a chew that can help with this problem. Plaque and tartar build up can lead to bad breath problems also - the last thing you need is a dog with bad breath! You can even clean your dogs teeth with special toothpaste and a vet can of course scale them (as a dentist would yours), but this is usually quite an expensive procedure done under general anaesthetic. Much better to give him something to chew that can help alieviate the problem or stop it becoming a problem in the first place.

The Kong dog toy is a brilliant innovation in the dog toy and dog chew world. Tough, durable and great fun for your dog - a Kong dog toy is a fantastic way to keep your dog occupied both in the house and on a walk!

The Kong toy was developed in 1976, a clever blend of active toy that could be thrown, chew and dog treat. Made from hard wearing (though not indestructible) rubber, the idea behind the classic cone shaped Kong dog toy is that when thrown, on landing it bounces in random directions. For our purposes here, it can also act as a dog chew, standing up to lots of punishment from even big dogs teeth. The red Kong toys are strong, the black Kong dog toys are stronger still - and perfect for the bigger dog. As a final trick up its sleeve, the hollow centre of the toy is designed to be filled with dog treats, kibbles, food etc. as an ideal and healthy way to keep your dog occupied, for instance when you go out. If you have any worries about using rawhide dog chews, a stuffed Kong toy is the perfect alternative to keep your dog busy and away from other potentially more destructive activities - such as chewing shoes, furniture and so on. They are a great way to discourage destructive chewing. Your dog has to work at getting the treats out of the toy - which should keep them busy for ages! Just make sure to pick a size of Kong appropriate for your dog - no too small for the size of dog, for safety's sake.

The Kong toy itself can be stuffed with all sorts of treats - dog kibbles, biscuits, cheese, dog food, dried meat and fish treats. Pretty much anything that is safe for a dog to eat can go in the Kong! People even add softer food and then freeze the Kong - for a dog ice lolly! Once your Kong has been emptied by the dog, it would be a good idea to clean it - a dishwasher is ideal for this.

There are plenty of Kong dog toy recipes for you to try out. Here are a couple of examples, or make something up yourself. If you are not sure if a particular food stuff is good for your dog, check with your vet first.

Frozen Dog Delight
Mix left over mashed potatoes, canned dog food and kibbles.
Pack into an appropriate sized Kong toy.
Freeze.
Serve to appreciative woofs.

Cheesy meaty treat
Take left over meat - chicken or turkey are ideal, tear into suitable sized chunks.
Mix with cream cheese (low fat better probably for Fido's insides) and pack into Kong toy.
Seal with a layer of cream cheese.

Nylabone chews are recognised as the most indestructible chews available for your dog. Made from tough Nylon and frequently impregnated with a smell your dog will find attractive, they are great for him to chew without having to be replaced every five minutes, or the risk of him being able to chew off large chunks to the detriment of his health. There is even a Big Dog special bone that is made of special extra tough nylon to survive in the hands of even the biggest dog. Our large German shepherd / Labrador cross has barely put dents in his, despite his best efforts! Of course, it is possible for the dog to chew bits off the Nylabone. The manufacturers claim that these very small pieces of Nylabone will harmlessly pass through your dog (much as the last plastic toy our dog managed to eat seemed to). Of course, it is sensible to make sure you get the right size for your dog - big dogs and small Nylabones would not be a good mix due to the risk of the dog being able to remove and swallow a good sized chunk. Big dog, big bone the rule should be. As with any chew toy, it is a good idea to supervise your dog whilst he chews.

Recommended, though sometimes dogs do prefer the rawhide chews. I have seen it suggested to leave a nylabone in a bag with some gravy or similar that will have an attractive smell for the dog, to get some of the smell into the bone to encourage your dog to start chewing the Nylabone.
